Local Locker’s Top Tip for Organizing Your Storage Unit

The best thing about having a storage unit with Local Locker is that you have a second closet on your block, just what every New Yorker needs. We’re here to give you our best tips and tricks to safely store your belongings while optimizing the space.

  1. Invest in Plastic Storage Bins: Not only will plastic bins protect your items, but it will also be much easier to organize your unit. Because many of our units are 7 feet high, the stackable bins allow you to utilize the full height of the space. You’re also able to easily see what you’re storing with clear bins.
  2. Use a Shelving Unit: A great way to keep your unit tidy and organized is by using a shelving system. You can arrange items to be easily accessible, and the shelves help to maximize the height of your unit.
  3. Label Bins: Avoid rummaging through your boxes by clearly and descriptively labeling each bin. It’s also a great idea to label your bins on both the side and the top. With clear totes that are labeled, you’ll always know what’s what!
  4. Stack Heaviest to Lightest: Make sure to always put your heaviest items on the bottom. You’ll be able to keep your belongings safer over time while also being able to sort through your items easily. It’s always best to store your most fragile items on top too!
  5. Arrange Front to Back: Keep your bulkier and less-used items in the back. This allows you to keep the things you need most often front and center.
  6. Utilize Suitcases for Heavy Items: My husband has a lot of books, and we love storing them in suitcases with wheels. They’re so easy to roll in and out of the unit, and you don’t have to worry about hurting your back lifting heavy boxes of books.
  7. Organize by Season: Rather than organizing by item, sort your bins by season. So instead of having all hats in the same bin, have all your winter stuff in one and summer in another. This prevents digging through multiple bins looking for seasonally appropriate items.
